I tend to fall back on the knitted on cast on, which is the one I learned as a child.  The video here demonstrates how to do it if you are left handed, or if you just knit that way. But there is more than one way to skin the casting on cat, and each method has it's own unique uses. There are three demonstrations here of the Long Tailed Cast On, each of which shows a slightly different method of getting to the same place.  You can also do a long tail cast on with two different colors of yarn, which will give you a constrasting "braid" effect on the bottom of your knitting.  I've seen it done on Fair Isle and Snowflake sweaters, hats, and mittens and it gives an interesting finish to the bottom of the knitting.

Learn as many methods as you can ....  add them to your knitting technique tool kit ...  and look at the Casting Off videos also.  Remember, edges matter.
